A self regulating platform for individuals with Hypertension

Project Description:
Smart Beat helps individuals maintain their blood pressure levels throughout the day by introducing medication based on the varied experiences and stress levels. It also makes the patient aware about the moments of stress and medication which enables them to make informed lifestyle decisions regarding their health.

Hypertension is a major factor for heart diseases and stroke, the first and fourth leading causes of death in the United States of America.

Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls or arteries. High blood pressure (Hypertension) increases your chances of heart disease and is dangerous because it often has no symptoms. Blood pressure is determined both by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure.

User Research

I used research methods like covert observation and primary interviews to get quality data. The user research started with an interview of the patient to better understand the medical condition as well as the current state of medication and lifestyle choices. I accompanied the patient for a couple of days to observe him in his everyday environment. Based on the interview and observations I built an Experience map to find opportunity areas in the patients daily routine. I also spoke with the patients doctor to understand the current medication system the patient follows to see if there were any points of intervention there.

Profession: General Manager Operations.
Family: Wife & Son.
Regulations: Diet (Low Salt, Medium Fat, Low Red Meat) | Controlled Weight (67kg) | Routine Checkup | Avoid Stress | On-Time Medication.

1. The patient is at risk if he forgets to take the medication on time.
2. The patient needs to be reminded by his wife to take medicines and carry them to office on daily basis.
3. The patient does not realize the daily stress which leads to high blood pressure.

Awareness of Daily Stress

The graph makes the user aware about their blood pressure through the day and geo tag locations when they experience high stress. Over a period the platform learns and indicates the user about certain health patterns.

Informed Medication

The user is informed about the amount of medication that is being injected into the body along with it's time and location. The app also informs the user about other patch details like remaining medical content, device expiry and reordering more pathches.

Smart Medication

The user can schedule daily prescribed medication on the platform so that the system can self regulate itself without user intervention. The platform also senses increase in blood pressure and injects medication to maintain blood pressure level.


Traditionally we use to design under the constraints of technology, but today design is defining new developments in technology that is enhancing the way we interact with our products. It is really exciting to design in today's changing times. So I took this opportunity to develop this project without being under any constraint and envision a future in the space of healthcare.
Key learnings for me were to use different frameworks and tools to better understand users and their needs.
